FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Buster comes a cropper!
Poor
buster ended up
on the wrong end of a rather large stick-2 foot long to be precise. He presented
to a local vet after
having a stick
removed from his throat. But
things weren’t right. Buster was unwell. That’s
where we stepped in. Using our endoscope and med rx - we found buster had a large gaping hole in his oesophageus which had become infected and full of food and grass. He had developed a chest infection from where the stick had penetrated his chest cavity.
So, we went looking for sticks and found none, but removed foreign matter from the large hole and stitched up his oesophageus.
To allow the wound to heal it was important to give his oesophageus a rest from swallowing. We inserted a “peg” tube from inside his stomach to exit at his abdominal wall. This allowed us to feed buster for 8 days via a tube with semisolid food via a large syringe.
After
that time the tube was removed. All
the above procedures were only
possible using an
endoscope to
view these
lesions, help stitch them up and pass the peg tube. All these images you see
here are copied from medrx
onto disc and hence onto our web site. We
enjoyed doing the surgery and hopefully buster will
appreciate it
too.
